Invitation to Poetry with Linda Carney-Goodrich
Have you ever wanted to write poetry but don’t know how to start? Are you curious about the language of poetry and its many forms? Would you like to read, discuss and try your own hand at different styles of poetry in a supportive and encouraging environment? In this workshop we will read and discuss a wide range of poetry from modern spoken word to the ancient and more formal. Each session will focus on a specific theme and include many prompts to get you writing. This workshop is an invitation to delve into art made of words, sounds, and metaphor. It is open to all, from the nervous beginner to the more confident poet.

Anne Pluto is the author of How Many Miles to Babylon, Linda Carney-Goodrich is the author of Dot Girl, and Deborah Leipziger is the author of Story & Bone.

Nature Writing Workshop for Kids 8-13 at Houghton’s Pond
Children ages 8-13 will spend time enjoying nature and exploring different forms of nature writing. In this four hour workshop, students will learn about and create different kinds of poetry including sense poems, talking to trees, wabi sabi walking poems, gatha, personification poems, haiku and tanka. During the workshop students will do nature scavenger hunts, walking meditation, and play theater games in between writing activities.
Students will use brushes, calligraphy pens, and ink to write their haiku poetry on rice paper.
During the workshop we will read and discuss nature poems by a few well known poets such as Mary Oliver, Ogden Nash, Joyce Kilmer, Robert Frost, and Christina Rossetti.
Students will have multiple opportunities to share and discuss their own writing.
Students should bring water, lunch, small notebook, and pens or pencils. Instructor will supply brushes, calligraphy pens, ink, and rice paper.
Drop off and pick up at the playground by the parking lot at Houghton’s Pond.
